Almost everyone knows the dramatic, emotional, musical story of the fiery Gypsy girl, Carmen. From the story by French novelist Propser Merimee, Bizet set his story to wonderful, stirring music, drawing upon his own great talent for "local color" by using typical Spanish themes and rhythms but set to French words.And now this famous opera will be shown by many well-known singers and Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and Shanghai Opera House Chorus on Dec 3&4 in Xinghai Concert Hal.This is the first time the opera Carmen be shown in Guangzhou!

The opera Carmen is just like a concert version of novel:Don Jose, a corporal in the Dragoons, falls madly in love with Carmen and even deserts the army to run away to the mountains with her and her band of Gypsies and smugglers. He is insanely jealous of Carmen who constantly taunts him. His childhood sweetheart, Micaela, follows him to tell him his mother is dying, at which time Don Jose goes with Micaela, leaving Carmen to take on her next lover, Escamillo. In the final scene, Don Jose returns to Seville to confront Carmen, and when she laughs at his protestations (and her possible fate), he kills her. The excerpt you will hear is the catch, rapid-fire quintet of the Smugglers El Dancairo and El Remendado and the Gypsied Frasquita, Mercedes, and Carmen.

In whatever language, whether with composed recitatives or in the opera comique version with spoken dialogues, Carmen is one of the mainstays of the operatic repertoire and popular with audiences all over the world. So don’t miss the wonderful performance on Dec 3&4 in Xinghai Concert Hall
